INTRODUCTION

Seat covers have been around for nearly as long as the car seat itself. Car seat covers were the exclusive domain of sheepskins up until the introduction of terry towelling seat covers in the late 60's. At the time the majority of car seats were vinyl and terry towelling covers gained acceptance in the market because they stopped the burn in summer and the freeze in winter.

From these humble beginnings fabric seat covers have grown in popularity and acceptance and now there are an array of different fabrics and designs available on the market. While burn or freeze of vinyl seats is a thing of the past seat covers still have 3 main benefits:-

1. Climatic: People can choose a fabric that is most suitable to their driving environment. People doing most of their driving during the day in hot climates may prefer a natural cotton cover for instance.

2. Protection: For most people their car is their first or second biggest asset so most people will want to protect the interior to maximise the resale value. Whether you smoke or eat in the car, have kids, or end up dirty after work, seat covers provide the best protection for your seats.

3. Fashion: Seat covers allow people to individualise their car and also provide a fashion statement. Look at cowhide or the colourful cotton seat covers to see this taken to the extreme.
